In Suffolk County, SPCA detectives charged Marylyn Richards, age 58, of West Babylon, on Friday, Oct. 22 following an investigation into allegations that she failed to provide her dog with veterinary care and grooming which caused the dog severe pain, discomfort, and suffering.
Roy Gross, the Chief of the Suffolk County SPCA, said that Richards neglected Minni, a female Maltese, which was extremely matted and covered with feces, urine, dirt, and debris throughout her fur when she was rescued by the SPCA.
Gross said that the severe matting and untreated medical issues caused the dog substantial pain, impaired vision, and restriction of movement. The Maltese also had severe dental diseases including infections and abscesses in her mouth.
Richards was charged with a misdemeanor count of animal cruelty under the Agriculture and Markets law. She was scheduled to appear at First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday, Nov. 10.
